Perched on a bluff overlooking the turquoise Caribbean sea, the magical Mayan ruins of Tulum are a must-do when staying in Cancun or on the Riviera Maya! Thought to have been a major Mayan port and full of history, you'll be dazzled by sacred temples including “el Castillo”, a clifftop temple commanding stunning views of the coast. Take a guided excursion to Tulum, either half day or full day, and you'll get to experience this incredible site, learn a little about the ancient Mayan culture, and relax on one of Mexico's most beautiful beaches before cooling off with a quick dip in the inviting sea.
My trip to Tulum is an experience I'll always treasure. We were promptly picked-up at our resort early in the morning and transported in an air-conditioned mini-bus. Buses park a little outside the site to maintain Tulum's scared charm, so you can expect a short 10 minute walk to the entrance. And then came our first glimpse of the ruins...
The stark gray stone set against a backdrop of turquoise sea and white sand beaches is simply stunning. As you explore the ruins you get a perspective of how large the site is – and the photo opportunities are endless! Our knowledgeable tour guide gave us an insight into Mayan culture and pointed out interesting features I never would have seen alone. History has never been my strong point, but he managed to keep me enthralled with tales of a bygone era. The site really has a unique atmosphere and you can't help wondering what it might have been like way back then. We were then free to explore Tulum on our own before cooling off in the sea. Finally, there was time for a quick stroll around the stores and stalls that are close to the parking lot before heading back to the resort. I was so pleased that I managed to tear myself away from the pool to discover magical Tulum – it's an experience I'll always remember!
