Following the successful renovation of many of Cancun's spectacular beaches, restoration work is scheduled to begin in Playa del Carmen. The $120 million project has been underway since October 2009 to restore miles of beaches along the state of Quintana Roo to their original splendor. Many beaches suffered from sand erosion following the devastating effects of Hurricane Wilma in 2005.
Playa del Carmen's beach restoration will begin on January 22 and is expected to last for approximately four weeks. The renovation work involves the use of floating pipes to pump sand from the ocean floor and transport it to the beaches, where heavy vehicles distribute and level it. At Playa del Carmen four wooden docks are to be installed on the beaches to store small fishing boats and to aid beach preservation. The 2.6 miles of beaches at Playa del Carmen are expected to be widened with minimal disruption to vacationers.
Following Cancun's beach renovation, vacationers have been very impressed with the results with one commenting that the beach near the Oasis Cancun hotel “is huge”. Surely the result they were hoping for!
