Planning on heading to the Caribbean this year? We've got some great news for you! Getting there just got cheaper as several low-cost carriers have expanded their route networks to include a wider range of Caribbean destinations. The low cost airlines are sure to offer many more competitive fares, and saving on the airfare means you can splurge a little on the hotel! 'What new routes have been introduced?' we hear you ask. Simply read on for a summary of the new routes by destination – we've also featured some of the new services on offer by the traditional carriers:
Cancun – JetBlue is launching two additional weekly flights from Boston to Cancun, taking the total to 3 per week, starting May 3. Spirit Airlines began it's seasonal non-stop service from Detroit to Cancun on February 11.
Jamaica – AirTran introduced new non-stop services from Atlanta, Baltimore/Washington and Orlando to Montego Bay on February 11. Launched in early January, JetBlue now operates a weekly Saturday flight from Boston to Montego Bay, and a daily Orlando – Montego Bay service began on February 8. JetBlue has increased it's service on the existing New York to Montego Bay route, featuring up to 11 flights per week. US Airways has also started a new non-stop Phoenix – Montego Bay service.
Aruba – AirTran launched new non-stop services from Orlando and Atlanta in early January. Both services will operate every Saturday. JetBlue is scheduling three additional weekly flights to Aruba from Boston, to take the total to 5 flights per week, starting May 3.
US Virgin Islands – Delta Air Lines recently started a daily service from New York's JFK to St. Thomas, and US Airways has also launched a direct service from Boston to the island. St. Croix is now receiving an increased service from Miami on American Airlines – it's now operating 10 flights per week between the two destinations. In mid-December Delta started daily direct flights from Atlanta to St. Croix.
Bahamas (Nassau) – AirTran began new direct services from Atlanta, Baltimore/Washington and Orlando to Nassau in December 2009. At the time of writing JetBlue was featuring airfares from Fort Lauderdale to Nassau from $29 per person each way.
St Lucia – JetBlue offers 3 flights per week from New York's JFK. American Airlines has introduced a second non-stop Miami service 4 days a week, on top of it's daily service.
Dominican Republic (Punta Cana) – JetBlue is launching new non-stop services between New York's JFK and Boston to Punta Cana, starting in early May.
