Should I Tip at an All-Inclusive Resort?

Tipping at an all-inclusive resort is a controversial topic for many travelers, and opinions tend to fall into one of two camps:

  1. “It’s all-inclusive, that means tips included!”
  2. “All meals and drinks are included, but you still have to tip for service!”

The hotels can complicate this matter as well, because each resort has its own tipping policy. Some resorts strictly forbid it, others welcome it and there are even certain resorts that have a no-tipping policy but allow it anyway. So what’s a person to do?

Be prepared with about $100 cash and ask the front desk once you arrive. They will tell you if they have a strict no-tipping policy or they might say that tipping is up to your discretion. If you end up at a resort that prohibits tipping, then you’ll still have extra cash for souvenirs!

However, many resorts do encourage tipping, so in case you have chosen a resort that does, we have put together a helpful list for you, depending upon your destination:

Caribbean

  • Bellman- $1-2
  • Maid- $1-2/night
  • Servers- 10-15% (or $2-3 for buffet meal, $5 for a la carte)
  • Bar- $1-2 every round of drinks
  • Tour Guide- $5-15
  • Tour Driver- $5-10

Mexico

  • Bellman- $1-2
  • Maid- $3-5/night
  • Servers- 10-15% (or $2-3 for buffet meal, $5 for a la carte)
  • Bar- $1-2 every round of drinks
  • Tour Guide- $5-15
  • Tour Driver- $5-10

Costa Rica

  • Bellman- $1-5
  • Maid- $1-2/night
  • Servers- 10% (or $2-3 for buffet meal, $5 for a la carte)
  • Bar- $1-2 every round of drinks
  • Tour Guide- $5-15
  • Tour Driver- $5-10

We hope this makes this tricky situation easier for you, and just remember – if someone provides you with exceptional service, a tip is a small gesture than can go a long way.
